What is a sill pan or sill dam?

A sill pan is a flashing system added under a door sill to help prevent many problems associated with water leakage around the sill and framing of doors. These problems include buckling floors, stained carpets, and rotting. Water leakage in these areas is common, but can be prevented by the simple installation of a sill pan during construction or remodeling. The sill pan is a waterproof layer that catches any water that runs down the insides of the door jambs or over the sill. It also helps eliminate condensation from thermal transfer. The sill pan is designed to redirect the water back outside the house where it will do no harm. The sill pan is manufactured from PVC plastic. This material is impervious to rust, corrosion, galvanic corrosion, electrolysis, and corrosive coastal areas.
